  18. The following error message is displayed during the user
  19. authentication phase of the remote login process:
  20.  
  21.    Error 642: The name already exists on the network.
  22.  
  23. CAUSE
  24. -----
  25.  
  26. This error message is usually generated when both the Remote Access
  27. Service (RAS) client and server are already connected via a local area
  28. network (LAN). When you try to log on to the network via RAS, the
  29. network discovers that your computer name is already registered on the
  30. LAN.

  32. RESOLUTION
  33. ----------
  34.  
  35. There are two ways to work around this error message. The first and
  36. recommended way is to disconnect your LAN cabling before using RAS.
  37. The second is to reconfigure the RAS server security access to "This
  38. computer only." (You can change the security access from the Network
  39. option in Control Panel.) Although the second method enables you to
  40. connect via RAS, it is not recommended because you will create
  41. multiple paths to the RAS server. This does not ensure network session
  42. stability.
